SCAN/IOP Masterclass in the Advanced Clinical Management of Addictions
"New Frontiers in the Treatment of Addiction"
Thursday 8th Dec 2011
Wolfson Lecture Theatre, Institute of Psychiatry, DeCrespigny Park, London
Introduction
The SCAN/IOP Masterclass in the advanced clinical management of addictions aims to provide an advanced knowledge and understanding of the latest developments and themes in treatment, with particular emphasis on evidence-based practice. SCAN is delighted to be able to provide the first Masterclass jointly with the Institute of Psychiatry on New Frontiers in the Treatment of Addiction.
Background
The Specialist Clinical Addiction Network (SCAN) was established in 2003 as a national network to support specialist clinicians working in the addiction field in the UK. SCAN was originally funded by the Department of Health and jointly supported by the Royal College of Psychiatrists and the National Treatment Agency for Substance Misuse.
In 2011 when its core funding ended SCAN moved to the National Addiction Centre at the Institute of Psychiatry, King's College London with a grant from the Department of Health to support further educational developments for professionals working with addictions.
The first development is this Masterclass on 'New Frontiers in the Treatment of Addiction' jointly provided by SCAN and the Institute of Psychiatry, King's College London. Further educational initiatives are being planned, and information will appear on this website when available.
Purpose
The purpose of this one day Masterclass is to provide an advanced knowledge of addiction treatment for clinicians and other professionals. The Masterclass will be suitable for psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, GPs and other professionals who already have a working knowledge of addictive processes and interventions. The Masterclass is not intended as an introduction to, or a systematic review of, the addiction treatment field. It will instead focus in more depth on key areas of importance where there is current controversy, important new evidence, or clinical problems for which there is currently a lack of clear evidence to guide practice. The Masterclass will be relevant to Continuing Professional Development. A certificate of attendance will be provided after the event.
